Publisher's deluxe full pictorial vellum, decorated in gilt with an image of the Golem on front board, boards warped; top edge gilt, other edges trimmed; patterned endpapers; illustrated book-plate of German art collector and bibliophile Leo Lewin (1881-1965) on verso of front free endpaper; sheets lightly toned.
Rare deluxe edition of Gustav Meyrink's modern fantasy masterpiece, based on the medieval Prague legend. Featuring 25 signed lithographic proofs by Czech artist Hugo Steiner-Prag, considered his best work. According to Sotheby's when this copy was sold by them in 1966, it is one of only four copies of this deluxe production.
A limited portfolio edition of 300 copies of 25 lithographic prints, signed by Steiner-Prag was issued by Wolff in 1916. The first trade edition by Wolff contains only eight plates.
